I have no idea. I try not to use the term “old” around old people as it is somewhat denigratory, I feel.

To me, it’s just math. Life expectancy in the US is about 80, so “middle age” would be 40-60. Over that is old.

laughing out loud. When I was in my 20’s and 30’s, old was 50. Now that I am just past 50, old is a tree that has been around for a VERY long time..or maybe the cat, who is almost 18.

as a kid any adult was old
as a teen anyone 25 and older was old
at 49 it’s hard to judge, because I’ve never looked my age (i owe that to never smoking or drugging, giving up drinking and tanning that for which some former high school chums still do and look old as dirt) i work with people in their 60s and 70’s that dont look old. so i think its all relative the older you get.

“Old is Gold”….80+ I’d say but then again I know some 80 year olds doing cycling, yoga and dancing.

It seems like as I get older, the “old” number goes up for me. However, as someone in my 20s, I tend to think 70+ is old.

“Old” has changed over the years. Hell, when I was 15 I thought 26 was “so old.” Nowadays people are more youthful. I honestly think it’s because we’ve grown more open-minded; and are more conscious of health; and are less stressed than our parents and grandparents. And as a Gen X’er, I’d like to believe my generation started it. We were the first generation to shun marriage until later, not have kids if we didn’t want to (then marry someone we truly adore later in life), go after dreams — not jobs; parents are going to concerts with their children, making the generation “gap” closer than ever. It’s so great! I’m 56 and people think I’m in my 30s because I truly lived MY life, not a life my mother (or society) wanted me to live.

This post is in response to a reporter last night giving election night exit poll results. He gave data from 18-44 year olds, and then fr 45+ year olds. Then he referred to the first group as “young” and the second group as “old.” Not oldER, just old. We laughed but were also taken aback.

I remember when I was a kid, I thought 30 was really old. Now I’m was past that and I think 50 maybe a bit old. My friend who is 50 thinks 50 is very young. Of course 10 years ago, she didn’t have the same opinion. 😉

I’m in the age group you listed and I would describe people who are 70+ as old, my husband says 65+. I think it is a personal thing and also a social construct. Jumping off another comment here, the idea that people as young as 45 can be described as old, by an adult, is really odd. Maybe my nephew might think so, but he’s also 9 and thinks that 16 is old.
