Downton Abbey: A New Era (Non-Spoilery Review)

Downton Abbey is one of the finest family dramas on both sides of the Atlantic. The intrepid Crawley family returns to the big screen in the continuation of their story. Like most families things change, times change, and people change. New opportunities for the family bring the past and the present to meet the future. As a fan of the TV series, I have found the movies to be quite good.

This movie does some great fan service while adding some new twists that tell a new story. We see lots of our favorite friends along with some new faces. I think you can appreciate this as a stand-alone film but it does help to see some of the TV series for helpful context.

Julian Fellowes is a terrific writer and you won’t be disappointed in this New Era of the story of Robert, Cora, and their children.

Downton Abbey The Movie Was Everything And It Was Terrific

Downton Abbey is a world-wide phenomenon and has a global audience so a movie is what would take it to a new level. This movie takes what you love about the TV show and makes it bigger and in some ways better because of the big screen. The story of a big event coming to Downton makes the Crawley family and their downstairs team rise to the occasion. Seeing Highclere Castle in the cinema was awesome.

If you have never seen the TV show this movie will inform you along the way as to what hard core fans have learned about this family over six seasons on ITV in the United Kingdom and PBS in America. I so recommend this movie to everyone. It’s truly a great family drama which we need more of on TV and in the Movies.

Farewell Downton Abbey

stream_imgTonight is the night in the United States where we say farewell to Downton Abbey. It will be a emotional night for many fans around the country. The notion that a drama about a British aristocratic family from the early 20th century would be wildly popular sounds crazy but here we are. Millions of fans around the world have embraced the Crawley family and their downstairs staff as one of their own. I am an Anglophile so this show has a instant soft spot in my heart.

My favorite characters are Robert, Earl of Grantham and Mr. Carson, his butler. They are two men who are the heart and soul of the show. Both of them are responsible for the world’s in which they command.

I will miss Mrs. Patmore, Daisy, Anna and John Bates along with Edith and Violet. So many of these people have inspired and infuriated at the same time.

Downton Abbey, thank you for providing people around the world some quality family drama that we will treasure forever.

Come 9:00 PM, I will be watching on my local public TV station WTCI in Chattanooga.
