Rambling About Tennessee and The Good Book

holy-bibleThere is a bill waiting to be signed by the governor in the state of Tennessee making The Bible the official state book. You would think I would be for this being a follower of Christ but I am not. This is just plain wrong. Using the Holy Texts of one faith tradition as a cheap way to get political points from ones base of supporters is prejudiced and is borderline theocratic. We live in a country made up of people from all faiths, creeds and culture. To elevate just one faith’s holy book is short sighted and does not speak to being good neighbors. The whole thing is about pandering and posturing and picking up political points with ones constituents. My country is founded in part on the notion of a separation of church and state.

As time changes and things change some folks feel threatened and they will do whatever they can to bring things back to the good old days. As I have said before the good old days were not good for everyone. Segregation and racism unfortunately exist then and now but that is a topic for another post.

God calls on His people to do better and be better and to be humble when they are serving others in His name. Believers are called to pray without ceasing, study to show thyself approved and to walk humbly before God and all these things without boasting. Ones faith is a personal thing.

I am just one person but there are many like me who believe in a loving, caring creator who wants us to live by example and not to bash people over the head with The Bible. As people leave the faith we have to ask why and this situation in Tennessee is one reason why.

There is a thing of freedom of and from religion. Perhaps we all should be more mindful of that as Americans.

  1. You are so tolerant and so averse to shoving your religion down other people’s throats it is really admirable. If all religious people were as tolerant and balanced as you the world would be a much better place. As you say in this post, it is vitally important to maintain the separation of religion and the state and people need to be free from religion as well as free to practise their religions as you say. As someone who has always believed in God but is now going through something of a crisis of faith not sure whether God exists I appreciate your open mindedness.
