All Saints Day 2016 – Remembering Those Who Have Gone Before. #allsaints
All Saints’ Day is a celebration of all Christian saints, particularly those who have no special feast days of their own, in many Roman Catholic, Anglican and Protestant churches. In many western churches it is annually held November 1 and in many eastern churches it is celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost.(From timeanddate.com)
I am grateful for all those who have inspired me to be the person I am who now are among the company of saints. On a day like this it is good to remember those people who sacrificed and gave their lives in the service of their creator and for people from all walks of life. God bless them for they are Holy and worthy.
Honoring Saint (Mother) Teresa of Calcutta
Today at the Vatican, Pope Francis canonized Mother Teresa of Calcutta as the newest Saint of the Catholic Church. Her charitable works have been noted in history and she made her community and the world a better place. Her life was focused on helping the poor and needy which has inspired many to do the same.
At church this morning my Sunday school class said this prayer that is attributed to her.
People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind,
people may accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful,
you will win some false friends and some true enemies.
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank,
people may cheat you.
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building,
someone could destroy overnight.
Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness,
they may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today,
people will often forget tomorrow.

The Merton Prayer
“My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. At church we say this prayer in my Sunday school class we call The Table. It’s a special prayer that anyone can say. The language is very inclusive and one of hope and faith.
Today Is Ash Wednesday, The Beginning of Lent
Ash Wednesday is one of the most popular and important holy days in the liturgical calendar. Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer.
Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday.
Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. As the priest applies the ashes to a person’s forehead, he speaks the words: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” (From Catholic Online)
I am an Episcopalian and tonight I will go to my parish, St. Peters Episcopal to receive ashes and to begin my personal journey in this Lenten season. I think its important to share experiences like this that makes ones faith story real. For many its giving up something or fasting during this season but some take on new things to bring them closer to Christ and to make the world a better place.
