My Favorite Invention

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Going Obsolete.”

I miss seeing a reel-to-reel tape deck (replaced by various devices). As a kid my dad would play music on one in the family den on Saturday mornings. Seeing the tapes spin and the volume meter go back and forth is a favorite childhood memory.

This is the very reel-to-reel model we had in our den when I was growing up.

The cassette deck is also a personal favorite although it was very limited in how many songs it could store and play. But its one of those things that I fondly remember. As a kid I would tape songs off the air on the radio and put records on tape so I could listen to them on a personal cassette deck.

Then there is the VHS VCR that almost everyone had. Of course you had to rewind the tapes. But I remember our first VCR when I was a kid, it was this huge thing that sat on top of a huge TV set. It was awesome to see a movie on a VHS tape.

Now there are other things I miss that have been replaced with new, innovative gadgets. But remembering the good old days is fun. You can appreciate what you had then and what you have now.

  1. I think the process of rewinding the tapes is the best. You can pop some snacks during that time. Besides, with rewinding, you can rewind to the exact spot unlike DVDs where sometimes, the closest you can get is with 30 seconds but I guess getting to choose the chapter you want to watch again is cool too. Great post.
