Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved blacks throughout the former Confederacy of the southern United States. 1. It is so strange. When America was formed only white land owners could vote. Blacks were granted the vote after 1865 but because of Jim Crow laws this was delayed. Woman joined the ranks of voters around 1921. The last group to get the vote were Indians. Hopefully all the groups will get out and vote in this next election cycle.
