Daily Prompt – Word Of The Day: Snob

There is a British TV comedy called “Keeping Up Appearances” which is about an eccentric snobbish middle-class woman who seeks to climb the social ladder. Her last name was Bucket but insisted on being called “Bouquet” just because it sounds fancy. She drove her husband, family and friends crazy trying to be better than they were.

I think some people have a little snob in them. They want to have a life of influence and affluence and everything that goes with it. Being satisfied with what they have isn’t enough. Snobs are always seeking the finest of everything and will spend time and treasure to get what they want in life.

Other people just want to make it day-to-day and are happy with the gifts of their real lives. I have made connections with people who are well off, but they were never snobbish. They were kind, and inclusive.

To me, being a snob is not a good look. We are all trying to get by, and perhaps showing grace by helping those in need is what we need more of. Snobs need some compassion because they might find themselves in need one day.

  1. I agree about us all having a little snobbishness. My inner snob has softened with age and an acceptance of reality over ideal. The actress playing Hyacinth, Dame Katherine Patricia Routledge, turned 95 this year. I romantically think she is the antithesis of the character. Believing she drew on the extremely British societal expectations of the 19th and 20th centuries.

  2. I like Brit TV. It almost seems more realistic than lots of stuff in the states. I think it was in an LM Montgomery book where the word ‘snobbocracy’ was used. I rather liked it. Very illustrative.
