Something About A Southern Funeral

I am in Thomaston, Georgia for the funeral of my aunt Dorothy or “Dot” as she was known by family and friends. We got here around 6:15 after enduring the awful Atlanta, Georgia traffic which is notoriously horrible.

When we got to my aunt’s house tonight we were greeted by family who were sure to feed us in the tradition of many families around the world when there is a death in the family. Now in the south it’s about fried chicken, the sides and deserts. Food is synonymous with coming together as family to remember and to reconnect. In the south when you are sick or a family member passes traditionally ones community comes to the side of those who survive. Gifts of food among other things are offered to ease the loss. Blessed are those who mourn as it says in scripture.

You know it shouldn’t take death to bring people back together in times like this. However for many family comes with complications that unfortunately cannot be overcome even in the passing of a loved one.

Dot’s funeral is on a Saturday in January at her church where she was a member for a very long time. This is the same church where her mother, my great-grandmother’s funeral was held fourteen years ago.

Her devotion to God was/is shown by her hospitality and love for family and friends. She lived a great life, a long life, a life that will be remembered.

A funeral is more than mourning the dead it can be a family reunion too. Sometimes that family is biological or chosen from your tribe of friends. It’s amazing how you can reconnect and renew the ties of family that bind you.

I know that Dot is with her mother, father, brother and sister in the company of saints above. For me I am grateful of these people’s impact on my life and how I know that life does go on in the hearts and minds who continue a legacy.

A quote I like is “Live your life so the preacher won’t have to lie at your funeral” so for Dot she has nothing to worry about.

Daily Prompt: Hospitality

I am reminded of so many stories in life where amazing things are done when people are welcomed. Hospitality means a lot and it can change the world. Making people feel at home and comforted can go a long way in building relationships and promoting peace. In scripture Jesus welcomed many and was welcomed into homes to share a meal and his ideas. In so many religions hospitality is an important part of what they are about. Today hospitality is an industry with hotels, motels and people renting out a room so someone has a roof over their head for a night or more. It’s good to be hospitable but it goes both ways. Never wear out your welcome and do your part to make others feel affirmed and secure. Always make room at the inn and at the table.

Quote Of The Day

Do not forget to be kind to strangers and let them stay in your home. Some people have had angels in their homes without knowing it. Hebrews 13:2 (NLV)

Laying Out The Welcome Mat, It’s Important

When you visit a house you might find a welcome mat, something to let you a visitor know that you are a guest, valued and people are happy to see you. I think organizations should practice a spirit of hospitality to strangers who find their way to their doors. Having been a church member all my life its especially important for a house of worship to be welcoming and happy to see new people who walk across the welcome mat. Who knows, they might come back and could be a regular visitor who could become a member that will make important contributions to the community or organization. Now not everyone is going to be a repeat customer or visitor but its good to be friendly to everyone.

Be sure to welcome strangers into your home. By doing this, some people have welcomed angels as guests, without even knowing it…Hebrews 13:2

Now on my blog I make it a practice to be welcoming to everyone. It’s just how I roll. Now it doesn’t mean someone can come in and be unkind. Being kind is a practice that is often hard to do but it is worth it. Hospitality is a concept and its something that is practical. Welcoming a stranger is important because they might be someone valuable who could help your life and yes as Hebrews says you might be welcoming an angel. So as the movie “Beauty and the Beast” once said “Be Our Guest” and everyone should be welcomed in any place in this life.

It really doesn’t take a lot of effort to be nice, kind, friendly. Reaching out to new people is in all of life will help you in life be more social and that will benefit you in so many ways. A smile, a handshake or perhaps a hug will connect you to someone who might make your life better.

Thank you for your hospitality

Whenever I visit your blogs I appreciate your hospitality. I think it’s important to have a blog that is welcoming to ones readers and encourages feedback. Of course its good to mind your manners when visiting a blog. You can do that by liking posts, offering positive commentary when possible and being respectful. A blog is an online home where you are a guest and you should never over stay your welcome, although I am not sure how that happens. Hospitality is an important concept in all of life. It’s important to be inviting and kind. Hospitality in life and on your blog is a two-way street my friends.

Hospitality is making your guests feel at home, even if you wish they were. ~Author Unknown
