Laying Out The Welcome Mat, It’s Important

When you visit a house you might find a welcome mat, something to let you a visitor know that you are a guest, valued and people are happy to see you. I think organizations should practice a spirit of hospitality to strangers who find their way to their doors. Having been a church member all my life its especially important for a house of worship to be welcoming and happy to see new people who walk across the welcome mat. Who knows, they might come back and could be a regular visitor who could become a member that will make important contributions to the community or organization. Now not everyone is going to be a repeat customer or visitor but its good to be friendly to everyone.

Be sure to welcome strangers into your home. By doing this, some people have welcomed angels as guests, without even knowing it…Hebrews 13:2

Now on my blog I make it a practice to be welcoming to everyone. It’s just how I roll. Now it doesn’t mean someone can come in and be unkind. Being kind is a practice that is often hard to do but it is worth it. Hospitality is a concept and its something that is practical. Welcoming a stranger is important because they might be someone valuable who could help your life and yes as Hebrews says you might be welcoming an angel. So as the movie “Beauty and the Beast” once said “Be Our Guest” and everyone should be welcomed in any place in this life.

It really doesn’t take a lot of effort to be nice, kind, friendly. Reaching out to new people is in all of life will help you in life be more social and that will benefit you in so many ways. A smile, a handshake or perhaps a hug will connect you to someone who might make your life better.

My Heroes Come And Gone

Mario Lopez said on Twitter that the bad part of getting older is seeing your heroes pass on. I must say he is on to something. Many of the people in real life and in pop culture who I call my heroes are leaving this life. At the ripe old age of 45 I am reading more and more the people who were a important part of my growing up are going through transitions in life. I am grateful for the lives of people I looked up to and admired. They influenced me to be who I am.

Give The Gift Of Life, Donate Blood!

I work for Blood Assurance a regional blood center that serves Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia and Alabama. We provided blood for patients injured during the shootings of July 16, 2015 here in Chattanooga. Emergencies are not the only time when blood is needed and the need for blood is constant. Every donation helps 3 lives and that is awesome.

Some folks can give while others can’t. We all have a part to play in making our world better. Giving your time and talents is a noble thing that benefits our greater global community. For me, donating blood is something I enjoy doing.

Positivity, It’s Hard As Hell To Be That All The Time

I try to be a positive person in life but there is no way to be that all the time. What we see in the news can really bring you down. You can’t always ignore it either because your friends and your social network are talking about it. Then there are situations you experience in person which impact you in a profound way. Putting a smile on your face can be a challenge. All the bad news in the world can really bring you down and make you question life. Being a beacon of positivity can make one weary and tired. Maybe it’s OK to be a little vulnerable and to be negative every once and awhile. Its hard as hell sometimes and that is OK. Bah!

Happiness

Being happy I hope means being authentic. Living your life on your own terms or on shared terms with a spouse or significant other. It should mean doing work that is meaningful to self and contributes to the betterment of society. Happiness is a very personal thing, and we celebrate it very differently. What the world needs now more than ever is more happiness. If we have that joy, peace, contentment then we have a lot. It should mean more than material things it should be something deeper and lasting. Hopefully your happiness will rub off on others who are desperate for it. Passing on happiness is a great gift to humanity. Come on get happy or work towards that.

A Take on Time Travel, We Cannot Go Back

The idea and notion of time travel has been written about in science fiction for years. Going back or forward in time is a fantasy many have. Of course there are consequences of time travel and you have to be careful not to do anything that would impact ones future or past. From “Doctor Who” to “Back To The Future” we have seen what travelling through time and space can mean.

The time travel I want to talk about is going back into the past. Many of us would love to go back to a time where we felt comfortable, safe, secure. There are memories that help time travel so to speak so we can be in a place or to recapture a moment we would have loved to stay in.

We all have the desire to go back to the good old days where things were simpler. The Doctor anddelorean-back-to-the-future Marty McFly with Doc Brown had means at their disposal to go back in time. However they eventually needed what was next, what was possible. They found themselves in the here and now with an eye on the future.

Some people want desperately to turn back the clock. However we can’t do that because of all the advancements we have made and the new found liberties for people who have lived life on the fringes. I don’t think a person of color would want to go back to a time when they were treated as less than human. No we can only move ahead to help everyone realize the great promises that lie ahead.

We all need to have an eye on the future because we can’t stand still. As we speak we are time travelling. As Steve Miller once sang “Time keeps slipping into the future” and its true. As much as we want to we can’t go home again. But we do have our memories to help is go back when we need to for a moment.
