Social Toxic

What do you think about the overall climate on social media these days? It seems with the subjects of the day where there is a lot of controversy about some hot button issues the atmosphere seems toxic. Here on WordPress.com and even on Tumblr there seems to be a more open minded environment at least by the people who I follow and who follow me. Facebook seems to be a minefield where controversy is just a click away. Living in the south the issues of the confederate flag and gay/lesbian marriage have made it a sad place to be at times. People are here seem to be less charged by emotion and more through thought, reflection and sensitivity to others.

Our personal blogs are a place for us to share how we feel, within reason. We do have to pick our battles and sometimes those battles are worth fighting. Social media I think is something that should be recreational and fun but I know people who live on and through Facebook so they can be heard when in other parts of life they feel silent.

So is social a toxic thing, I don’t think it has to be. You are in control of your social life.

  1. Yes! Facebook in particular puts me in a terrible headspace. I LOVE Instagram but I am staying off of Facebook except for blogging purposes. The blogosphere of course is my happy place. 🙂

  2. I hate hearing all the political stuff on Facebook..These are my friends and it bothers me the things they say. I try to stay out of it. I have my ideas and they don’t agree with a lot of what is out.

  3. For me, it’s a yes. and just like @keenpeach I also stopped using much of my personal fb account and concentrated on blogging. To be honest, I prefer blogging. I enjoy spending my time browsing and learning new things from people around the world. One more thing, it’s an eye sore for me whenever I read rude comments of people about certain topics. where are their manners? seriously.

  4. Reblogged this on Mouthy – The Lifestyle-Etiquette Blog by Xssy Alex and commented:
Something of the night definitely happens to people on Facebook. Facebook is the public toilet of social media. The culture is so unclean and unsafe. It really shows the underbelly of people. I also cannot believe how accurate FB is in terms of how easy it is to identify the true nature and personality of an individual simply by what they put on or do not put on their pages. Creepy!

  6. Some of it’s toxic, and some of it is cruel. I like WordPress, and Flickr. I don’t go near Reddit and I’ve never liked Facebook. My overall policy is that anyone who thinks they can verbally abuse me into silence is blocked, period. I don’t have the time to deal with a politically correct conservative–which is actually one of the big shifts over the past decade. The party of political dogma might have been the democratic party in the 1980’s…but that changed in the 1990’s…
I didn’t have patience for it when it was left wing dogma and I have even less patience for it from the right.

I think the saddest thing of all is that we have serious problems to face as a nation–and we need to be able to talk to each other and share ideas without being bullied and shamed —
