Especially given today’s political climate, a free and independent press (one free of government control, no matter which party is running the government) is essential to preserving liberty. If the government tries to control the stories that the press puts out, that is one step towards brainwashing the masses. It puts all the other freedoms afforded to us in the First Amendment at risk.
