It’s time for that classic movie that shows today’s films how to save the world from aliens while obliterating The White House the right way. Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch and a deeply talented cast make this movie a classic. This film is a family classic that we watch each July 4th but this year on July 3rd.

A Note To My Followers, Old and Young
I appreciate the wide variety of ages I have found here on WordPress. Younger bloggers provide a great perspective on life and they are in many ways wise beyond their years. My philosophy is that in blogging we are all peers and I think that is true…to a point. In the crazy world we live in one can never be too careful and you have to be above board and transparent online. I don’t mind connecting with bloggers of all ages but I want them to be aware of the fact I am 45 years old. One can never be too careful these days. If you have any questions let me know.
I am glad to be a mentor and a friend to anyone. Just know that boundaries are a good thing when connecting with anyone. Thank you for understanding and your friendship.
My Favorite Invention
In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Going Obsolete.”
I miss seeing a reel-to-reel tape deck (replaced by various devices). As a kid my dad would play music on one in the family den on Saturday mornings. Seeing the tapes spin and the volume meter go back and forth is a favorite childhood memory.

The cassette deck is also a personal favorite although it was very limited in how many songs it could store and play. But its one of those things that I fondly remember. As a kid I would tape songs off the air on the radio and put records on tape so I could listen to them on a personal cassette deck.
Then there is the VHS VCR that almost everyone had. Of course you had to rewind the tapes. But I remember our first VCR when I was a kid, it was this huge thing that sat on top of a huge TV set. It was awesome to see a movie on a VHS tape.

Now there are other things I miss that have been replaced with new, innovative gadgets. But remembering the good old days is fun. You can appreciate what you had then and what you have now.
Rambling About Being Yourself and Keeping Up With The Jonses
Being yourself is a challenge when you feel like you have to adapt to the whims and norms of others. Keeping up with the Joneses means trying to impress people by putting on airs and buying things of value so that you will look the part. Sometimes it means doing things that go against your nature. This evening an episode of the Andy Griffith Show, Andy sends Opie to a camp where Opie meets a boy from an affluent family. This puts pressure on the Taylor family to act differently and do things differently because they feel like in order to be accepted by the family of Opie’s friend.
This is a common theme when people who want to be accepted, to be in the in-crowd which means they have to live above their means. People are always trying to impress so they will feel included in society. We all want to be a part of something bigger than ourselves but should it mean selling our soul and compromising our core beliefs to do so.
I have seen people who have tried to keep up with the Joneses at a great cost. Everyone has a dream and we all want those dreams to come true but my friends people can pick out those who are less than genuine. Perhaps being realistic about who we are and where we are in life will mean you can be accepted by those who matter and will be with you for the long haul.
Be honest with yourself, with others and enjoy the blessings you have, because someone thought you would need them.
