Juneteenth, A Celebration of Freedom

Today is Juneteenth in the United States. Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when enslaved Texans learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It is indeed the day when all slaves were free.

It’s an important holiday to remember a dark part of American history where people owned people. It’s something that should never be repeated. Freedom takes vigilance and practice. I celebrate with those whose ancestors were enslaved longer than they should have been.

Remembering Juneteenth, An Important Holiday Celebrating Freedom

Juneteenth is an annual observance on June 19 to remember when Union soldiers enforced the Emancipation Proclamation and freed all remaining slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865. The observance of this holiday is an opportunity for people to celebrate freedom and equal rights for all citizens in the United States. This is an important time for African Americans and is a reminder to all Americans about this dark time in history. This is also a reminder that all people should be free to enjoy the benefits of life, liberty, and happiness. We must be mindful of those who lived under the oppression of slavery in the United States and elsewhere.

Captain America: Civil War – A Dark, Heroic, Complicated Tale

I made a joke that Captain America: Civil War was a nothing but a story featuring hero-on-hero violence. You know what happens when you assume stuff. This movie was entertaining, thought provoking and somewhat heartbreaking. Without giving away anything I will say that we are all manipulated by political forces and sometimes people on the same team have to choose the best way to go about doing something and therefore causes much conflict, even war. The cast performances are top shelf and I think Chris Evans and Robert Downey, Jr. are amazing. If you haven’t seen this movie, go. You might want to watch the Captain America, Iron Man, Ant Man and Avengers movies before seeing this one to provide much needed context. This is probably the best super hero movie made in quite some time, a new standard has been set.
