Cheap Dollar Store Eats

Everyone is trying to stretch their food dollar. We went to the Dollar Tree store after work and I challenged myself to make a meal from ingredients I found there.

So I found some ham, stir-fry veggies, rice, and some teriyaki sauce, so I did a ham stir-fry.

So I put in the veggies, ham, a scrambled egg and rice and after a few minutes of cooking it turned out alright. I should have added more fat and some garlic and pepper. Otherwise, it was a decent first attempt. All total, it was just over $9 to make for two people. I will try it again sometime.

What’s your favorite recipe?

This recipe is a family favorite from a friend of the family. I absolutely love this dish because it’s beef and sauce and full of good memories. It’s good with rice and steamed broccoli. Each year I ask for it on my birthday. Check out the Soup Diva’s site to check out the recipe.

My Culinary Specialties

Daily writing prompt
What food would you say is your specialty?

I love cooking breakfast on Saturday mornings. My specialties include pancakes, waffles, biscuits and gravy, breakfast burritos, omelets, scrambled eggs, and that sort of thing. This morning I made scratch-made pancakes. I also enjoy making basic Italian food like spaghetti. On weekdays I do spam with mac and cheese in about 10 minutes. It’s good to have things you can do in the kitchen so you don’t have to eat out so often.

A Tribute To Russell Morash – A Public TV Icon

I am a big fan of the Public TV series “This Old House”. Its creator Russell Morash is an icon who also created many how-to shows on Boston’s WGBH public TV station including “The French Chef” from Julia Child. I am going to be bold to say that without Russell Morash the modern home improvement and food TV scene would not be the same. He was influential and creative. Russell died on Thursday at age 88. There will never be anyone like him again.

National Microwave Oven Day

I heard on the radio this morning that it’s Natural Microwave Oven Day. I checked and it’s for real being held on December 6th of each year. Go nuke something to eat today. It’s all safe.

Roasted And Baked Butternut Squash

I cooked butternut squash for the first time. All I did was roast the squash, let it cool, scrapped it out into a mixing bowl where I put honey, salt, pepper, and a little butter. I then baked it in the oven for about 10 minutes. Easy and delicious (I hope).
