Sunday Reflection: Coronavirus and George Floyd

Coronavirus and George Floyd without a doubt are the two stories that have dominated the public consciousness over the past few weeks. The virus and racism are things that are serious illnesses that everyone is contending with these days. It would be safe to say that both have caused much chaos in the order of things.

Can we say that the chaos we are experiencing is going to create lasting change. Perhaps a new way of living and thinking is being born. Normal life is being recreated and in my mind its for the better.

For too long the status quo has ruled the day but I recognize that is a highly personal situation. However in a universal sense the status quo got us to where we are in this point of history. There was no way anyone could have predicted a year ago the pandemic but racism has always been there. Racism of any type is wrong. It is the great sickness that has cost humanity dearly. Why are black people treated so badly?

My friends we are going through some hard times in the world we live in. How we answer the call and face the challenges will be recorded in our history books. Now is the time to learn to love more and hate less. Be mindful of the needs of others. We cannot afford to mess this up. The future of our world depends on it.

Right now we owe it to those who have lost their lives due to the virus and racism to make things better for everyone. Yes my friends Black Lives Matter. May those who need healing get it freely. As a person of faith I pray for all to be well sooner rather than later.

The Thing About: The Virus

Allow me to be serious for a minute or a little more. Over 90,000 people in this country and 317,000 around the world have died from COVID-19. Now is not the time to have strange conspiracy theories or to play the blame game. Energy would best be used in finding a cure for this deadly virus.

This pandemic has already changed the course of history forever and we have to remain focused on preventing people from getting the virus and caring for those who are sick with it. Deaths along with job losses have impacted people more than anything else in recent memory.

Spreading false information is going to get people more people killed. It would be awful to see another spike in cases and deaths. People have to behave, do their parts, and be true neighbors so that everyone will be safe.

Rumor has it that it’s the twenty-first century, let us act like it.

May We Grow Back To Something Better

I have talked previously about the return to “normal” and frankly I don’t want to go back there. Right now we have to chart a new timeline and a new course. Taking the lessons of the past few weeks and applying to a new way forward. We aren’t going back because that’s not the direction any of us is going. Courage and compassion are the rules of the days ahead.

The Thing About Doing Stuff

Doing stuff in your home is necessary to keep chaos at bay. Saturdays are good for that sort of thing assuming it really is Saturday in this land of Coronavirus. Doing chores isn’t always fun but its always necessary.

My grandmother was one of those women who kept a tidy house and that is something I cannot seem to achieve myself. I can do better but I do what I can. Yes, doing stuff even around your dwelling can be drudgery but you know if you can get a few things done as you go along its not quite bad.

You do have a sense of accomplishment and face it you have to step away from the computer every now and then to help you keep your sanity.

It’s Not Tyranny

Restrictions and safety measures are not tyrannical, it’s doing what’s best for the community. Keeping a virus from spreading benefits everyone in the long term. Those who are complaining need to chill out and think about their friends and neighbors. Elected officials are charged with keeping the public safe and to make difficult decisions even when it might cause an inconvenience to some.
