Righteous Anger, Righteous Profanity

The Minneapolis mayor was right to use profanity to get his point across. Right now, I feel like profanity and other things are necessary for the moments we are living in. Life depends on it. Decorum is out of the question right now when people are getting unalived and abducted. A strong response is what is needed and if some get offended then that is their problem. Fighting back is what must be done. So dammit, let’s give this all we have. There will be hell to pay.

I Am Team Jesus But I Cuss Some Too

I don’t have a problem with profanity if it’s artistic and emotional. Swear words need to have a purpose. I didn’t used to cuss but as I have gotten older I have said what the Hell, let’s express myself. It’s a part of not trying to please everyone all the time. Righteous anger is righteous.

To me, the way Christians treat others sometimes is way more profane than any cuss word could be.

TV and Profanity

badlanguageWatching a movie with a modest amount of profanity on basic cable TV is kind of funny when they edit the profanity out. Yeah I am still a fan of regular cable TV and have not cut the cord yet primarily because of over the air signals are hard to get where I live. So when you watch a movie that has curse words and even tasteful nudity edited out it is almost comical. I guess it’s what you have to do to show some movies to a wider audience. I have thought about swearing and think it’s OK if you are showing extreme emotion but if it’s used in a way that it becomes just something to say because the writer couldn’t figure out something else to say then it loses it’s intended effect. It’s really surprising what doesn’t surprises us these days. Cussing on TV is one of those things that has made us a little desensitized to the whole world of profanity.

Dammit, I forgot to use an actual curse word in this whole post on profanity! How dare me.

The “F” Word…Lost Shock Value Of Profanity

In conversation with my wife this morning I used the “F…” word to describe how I felt about something we were talking about. No I didn’t use it in relation to her…that wouldn’t be cool but it made me think I don’t use a lot of profanity. Perhaps we have let profane words like the “F…” word become so common place it has lost its power to shock and surprise. Using such words should indicate disgust, displeasure, frustration…not being used as nouns or adjectives. Some bloggers and writers will use curse words like they were putting ketchup on fries or salt on popcorn. If we were more selective about how we use such words perhaps it would mean more.

Our vocabulary is full of words that can express emotions and feelings better than profanity but sometimes there is no substitute. Perhaps you have read things where the words used to blast someone or some thing were impressive and far more effective.

So, when you least expect it I will use the word itself instead of the censored version I have used in this post and that is when you know I need to get my point across.

What do you think?
