The Big Internet Brands Of The ’90s — Where Are They Now? : All Tech Considered : NPR

What happened to all those other big brands that dominated the early Internet experience? Here’s a nerdy remembrance of a few of them.

I first got online back in 1995 after I bought a computer that could get on the World Wide Web. I had other computers that accessed Prodigy and some Bulletin Board Systems. The 1990’s were kind of the beginnings of the commercial Internet. I do miss those days but I kind of like the blogging and social media of the here and now. NPR’s report gives us a historical look back to the early Web.

Rambling About Politics on Facebook

Facebook-logo-PSDToday on Facebook I said I would probably stop posting political posts there. After some offensive responses to some posts which led to the deletion of the comments and the un-friending of a person I had known for 10 plus years. Politics is personal and in this cycle in the United States it’s been ugly and is getting uglier. This campaign between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump is going to fracture some friendships. No two people agree on everything. But being respectful is what we need in times like this.

Now I support Hillary Clinton without reservations. Sure she doesn’t have a spotless record, who does really. Some squeaky clean politicians surely have a few skeletons in their closet. Most everyone in public life have made some enemies along the way. What Secretary Clinton did for children, families and others inspires me plus she has faith that closely resembles my own.

So, here it is. I will continue to post political material on Facebook. However I will originate it from my blog and cross post the link and a small excerpt there. At least I will try it that way for awhile. My blog is my domain, my turf, my site of record here online. My blog fully bears my name. These are the ground rules, for now. Let’s see how it goes.

A Ramble About Retirement

20160729_120522.jpg

Today a co-worker retired after 33 years of service to the company and there was a pot-luck lunch given in her honor. My longest tenure was 8 years for Olan Mills Church Directories. People have multiple jobs in multiple locations over their lifetime. Just ask freelancers, ministers and others who work one string of temp jobs after another. Some people change jobs like they do their socks.

There is something to be said for longevity and stability. It sure makes managing your retirement fund easier I would think. Companies are getting rid of older workers all the time to keep payroll and expenses lower to improve profit margins.

Retirement is a great thing. They say you are busier in retirement than at any other time in life. This is something we all must face at one time in our lives. I can safely say I won’t get a retirement cake saying 33 years. I might get a cupcake or something like that.
