Macy’s said Wednesday it’s shutting down 68 stores and cutting more than 10,000 jobs. The announcement was issued alongside an unfavorable earnings report, showing comparable store sales dipped 2.1% last quarter. The news caused its stock to plunge nearly 10% during after-hours trading Wednesday.
Macy’s has been a retail giant and an American institution for generations. A lot of retailers are facing similar decisions. Although there is not a a Macy’s where I live this still has a significant impact in how we buy goods and where does this model of store fit in a highly online world.
(From CBS News) Cindy Stowell was battling stage-four colon cancer when she had a six-game “Jeopardy” winning streak, earning over $100,000. She never told her friends of family, wanting them to watch for themselves when the episodes aired.
This is inspirational and heart breaking at the same time. She had a mission and fulfilled it. Her death is a very sad thing but what she did for Cancer research will help others for a long time.

This is a photo collage from a visit to Gatlinburg, Tennessee back in 2008. It’s a picturesque tourist destination in the Great Smoky Mountains. Time Warner is the parent of CNN, TNT, HBO, the Warner Bros. studio, and other channels and websites. AT&T to buy Time Warner in media mega-deal – Oct. 22, 2016
This move caught me off guard. Granted I wasn’t looking for it though. AT&T and TimeWarner are two of America’s largest distribution and media companies. I am not sure this is good for competition or for diversity in opinions. We will have to see how this shakes out or even gets approval by the federal government. AT&T recently bought DirecTV and TimeWarner was bought by AOL years ago and spun AOL off to independent operation. Again, wow, this is huge!
Should I watch the 3rd United States Presidential Debate? Is it going to make a difference at this time for me or the nation at this point? I think watching it by Twitter or some other way might be good. My mind has been made up for a long time, so I guess I would be better served by watching something else. Maybe I am too chicken and I am afraid that my candidate is going to screw up. To be honest the political cycle this time around has been very caustic and very mean. Let’s see how I feel after watching Survivor: Gen X vs. Millennials on CBS TV.
