LA LA Land, The City of Stars

og

I am late to the party on this movie but its truly amazing. Fantastic dialogue, music and dancing. A modern musical made awesome. Emma Stone and Ryan Gossling are electric together. We need more meet-cute romantic flicks like this that are throwbacks to an earlier time. Movies should say something and this one does. It’s all about The City of Stars.

When Doing A Movie Sequel

the_rundown_worst_sequels_ever

Hollywood movie sequels should have a familiar feel without being too complicated or over the top. There are too many movies that were too gimmick laden and kind of cheesy (although I don’t mind cheese). There are too many movies that try too hard to be so different that you can’t see what the original was even about. Special effects can get in the way. Introducing too many new characters that don’t have a tie into the previous installments can only make things confusing. Storytelling should be the first and foremost concern and everything else is secondary.

Contact: A Terrific Movie About What Is Out There

Contact_ver2In this Zemeckis-directed adaptation of the Carl Sagan novel, Dr. Ellie Arroway (Jodie Foster) races to interpret a possible message originating from the Vega star system. Once first contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence is proven, Arroway contends with restrictive National Security Advisor Kitz (James Woods) and religious fanatics bent on containing the implications of such an event. An incredible message is found hidden in the signal, but will Arroway be the one to answer its call?

I love all the spiritual and scientific questions this movie brings to the forefront. It’s always timely and Carl Sagan does a terrific job in letting the reader/viewer make their own conclusions. One thing I see in this is that people tend to screw things up when there is a turf war at stake.

Tale As Old As Time, Beauty And The Beast

Beauty and The Beast is a classic Disney animated movie from 1991. Fast forward to 2017 where it’s made into a live action film with another all-star cast featuring Harry Potter actress Emma Watson and Downton Abbey actor Dan Stevens. It is faithful for the most part to the original movie but needs CGI magic to make this movie dance. The music is quite good as one would expect.

I was impressed with the level of talent this movie brings. I am always curious about movies set in France where the characters speak in a British/English accent but that is for another post. There is something special about this remake and you will be pleasantly surprised by the movies action and drama. Speaking of action there is quite a bit of intense scenes where there is violence so be wary.

This movie is a tale as old as time it’s about love, friendship and fighting ones fears and even prejudice.

The Shack: A Report

Six years ago I read the book “The Shack” and that book changed how I view my faith and what God does for his people who are in great sadness. A movie based on this book is coming out this weekend and I wanted to share with you what I thought about this profound story.

For the past few days I have been reading a great book called ?The Shack?. Written by William P. Young it tells the fictional story of a man named Mackenzie Allen Phillips or as he is informally known as ?Mack? and his struggles with his faith which has been shaken by a bad relationship with his father and the death of his daughter named Missy.

Mack goes through the heart wrenching search for Missy who is abducted by a serial killer. Missy?s blood soaked dress is found in a shack where Mack would go through an amazing spiritual journey that would lead him back to a reconciled relationship with his father and the forgiveness of the killer who took his daughter?s life.

The great thing about this book is how it portrays God in three persons (known as the Trinity). God who is called Papa is a huge black woman…
